San Jose, Calif. - The San José State women's basketball team launched 28 3-pointers and hit a team-record 14 on their way to a 95-81 victory over the Georgia State Panthers on Wednesday night on Walt McPherson Court.
Rebecca Woodberry hit 7-of-11 from behind the arc and finished the night with 25 points. Ta'Rea Cunnigan also had 25 points, was 4-for-8 from long range, and led the team with nine rebounds. Classye James reached double figures for the four straight game with 17 points.
Woodberry came out smoking, hitting two threes in the first minute and a half, and after a Britta Hall layup with 16:31 to go the Spartans (5-5) owned a five-point lead, 12-7. A layup from Brittany Logan at the 13:33 mark gave Georgia State its first lead of the night, 15-12.
But a Rachol West 3-pointer on the Spartan next possession tied the game. After a Panther turnover, Woodberry hit another trey. Barely a minute later she sank her fourth 3-pointer in five attempts and the Spartans led 23-17 with 11:27 left in the half.
Despite the hot shooting from distance, San José State couldn't build a lead bigger than eight points in the first half and saw Georgia State (4-7) close the first 20 minutes on a 17-9 run. San Jose native Ashley Watson, who attended Archbishop Mitty High School, had four points in the run as did Ashanti Groover. The teams went to the half tied 49-49.
In the second half, the Spartans came out just as hot as in the first. They got 3-pointers from James, Hall and Woodberry along with a layup from Riana Byrd to build a 60-49 lead with 17:19 to play.
A Jasmine Smith layup with 10:02 left gave San José State its biggest led of the night, 75-55. Georgia State kept chipping away at the lead and after a jumper by Kendra Long with 3:30 to play it was an eight-point game, 80-72.
The Spartans tightened up on the defensive end, forcing the Panthers into missing their next four shot attempts. Woodberry's last 3-pointer of the night made it 87-72 with just over two minutes to play and San José State came away with the 14-point win.
With the victory the Spartans snapped a four-game losing streak and improved its home record to 4-1.
Georgia State's offense was led by Long and Kayla Nolan who each had 16 points, Haley Gerrin added 10 and Watson contributed eight in the loss.
The Spartans return to Walt McPherson Court on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. against the UMKC Kangaroos.
