Final Stats

Waco, Texas - The San José State women's basketball team equaled a program record by hitting 13 3-pointers and four players scored in double figures, but the No. 9-ranked Baylor Bears proved to be too much for the Spartans in a 113-73 win on Tuesday night.

San Jose State's 73 points are the most given up by the Bears, whose opponents have been averaging just 51 this year.

"I wanted our players to play in an atmosphere that was like the opening round of the NCAA Tournament," head coach Jamie Craighead said after the game. "Being here and experiencing a place where there is so much passion and the fans come out and really support their team will help us as the season progresses."

San José State (4-4) was feeling it early on. In the first seven minutes they shot 57 percent from the floor and were a perfect 5-for-5 from beyond the arc. Rebecca Woodberry, who finished with a team-high 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds, hit her first three treys. The third gave the Spartans a 23-18 lead with 13:40 to play in the half. It would turn out to be the team's largest lead of the game.

A Sune Agbuke layup with 12:11 left put Baylor (7-0) ahead for the first time 24-23. It was the start of a 29-to-4 run for the Bears in which Odyssey Sims scored nine of her game-high 29 points and dished out five of her 13 assists.

"She is the best point guard in the country and probably the best player in the country," Craighead said of Sims. "It was fun to watcher her and you catch yourself watching her, but I thought we did okay. Their ball screen really hurts us more with their big players. We can't switch it and when we tried to trap it, she split it."

Rachol West equaled her season-high with 11 points and hit three 3-pointers. Ta'Rea Cunnigan had 16 points, three from distance, and Classye James finished with 17 and a two from beyond the arc. James relentlessly sacrificed her body by driving the lane against the bigger Bears. She went to the line 11 times, making nine of her attempts.

Riana Byrd grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds, her second game in a row in double digits and her fourth this year. Seven of her 10 boards were on the offensive glass.

For the game Baylor outrebounded the Spartans 64-to-46. They used their height along the front line for a 74-to-18 advantage in points in the paint and turned 24 San José State turnovers into 30 point going the other way. They built a 41-point lead midway through the second half before cruising to the win.

The Spartans return to the court on Saturday, December 7 at Sacramento State. Tipoff in Hornet Gym is set for 2:00 p.m.
