2014 SJSU Baseball Schedule
Matchups against three Pac-12 teams, a home-and-home series with #16-New Mexico and two rivalry series at home versus Nevada and Fresno State are just a few highlights on the 2014 schedule for the San José State baseball team in its inaugural season in the Mountain West (MW).
Spartans fans have the chance to see the team at home early and often with nine of the first 10 games taking place at Municipal Stadium.
"I think this is a challenging schedule with our Mountain West matchups," said Spartans' head coach Dave Nakama. "It will be interesting to open up the season in league play. I think the Pullman trip will be great for our players because it gives them a chance to play on the road in a different environment. Those games will help us for the second half of the conference season."
MOUNTAIN WEST PLAY
Right out of the gate, the Spartans will host San Diego State on Opening Weekend at Municipal Stadium for a three-game set on February 14-16. The Spartans and Aztecs will square off again in San Diego, Calif., on April 25-27 as part of a MW home-and-home series.
San José State also has a home-and-home series on the schedule with MW foes #16-New Mexico, UNLV and Nevada.
The Spartans conclude MW play with a three-game series at home against rival Fresno State (5/2-4), and then travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to face Air Force (5/9-11). The series versus the Bulldogs will be May 2-4 and is the final home series of the 2014 season.
NONCONFERENCE PLAY
San José State will see an array of teams from the Pac-12, West Coast Conference (WCC) and Big West in nonconference play this season.
Stanford will visit Municipal Stadium early in the year on Tuesday, February 18 for a 6 p.m. start. SJSU will see the Cardinal again in the 55th and final game of the season at Sunken Diamond on May 13.
More Pac-12 action comes the Spartans' way at the end of March when they head to Pullman Wash., for four games against Washington State (3/27-30). Another one of Nakama's former teams, the Washington Huskies, will visit Municipal Stadium in early March for a matchup with San José State in the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament.
The Pacific Tigers of the West Coast Conference and UC Davis Aggies of the Big West are also a part of the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament and will face SJSU at Municipal Stadium.
Other nonconference matchups for San José State throughout the year include: UC Santa Barbara, Saint Mary's College, San Francisco, Santa Clara and Cal Poly.
THE MW CHAMPIONSHIP
The MW Championship Tournament will be held at Earl E. Wilson Baseball Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev., on May 21-25. All seven teams in the MW automatically qualify for a chance to play in the tournament, with the six and seven seeds pitted against each other in a play-in game. The winner of that contest will play on in the tournament which is double-elimination.
ALUMNI GAME
The San José State baseball program invites all of its alumni to return to South Campus on February 8 at 1 p.m. for the annual Alumni Game at Blethen Field. This will be a great opportunity for baseball alumni to continue their relationship with each other and the SJSU baseball program.
This year's team is hoping to give our alumni added exposure, including video board face time during Spartan home games. The Alumni Game will be a great opportunity for former players to remind this year's Spartan faithful about their lasting memories of wearing an SJSU uniform via video recording.
