Houston, Texas--Rashad Muhammad hit a three-pointer to give the San José State men's basketball team the lead for good over Houston, and Jalen James hit four key free throws and recorded a triple-double and lead the Spartans to a 72-68 win at Hofheinz Pavilion Saturday night.
Muhammad came off the bench to lead all scorers with 21 points, his second 20+-point game of the season. He was 7-of-12 from the field including 5-of-7 from three-point range. His biggest shot of the night came with 1:34 left on the clock as he hit a three-pointer to give San José State (3-6) the lead for good over Houston (6-4).
After trailing 41-29 at halftime, Muhammad was also key at getting the Spartans within reach of overtaking Houston in the second half. Down 60-49 with 7:58 left in the game, Muhammad hit two three-pointers and a field goal over the next 2-plus minutes to get San José State within three points at 60-57. He then hit a three-pointer with 4:42 remaining to tie the game at 60-60.
James recorded only the second triple-double in school history, third in Mountain West history and the first this season in the conference. He had 12 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists in 38 minutes of action. His points came on 3-for-4 shooting from the field including 2of-2 from three-point range and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. James made all four free throws in the final 17 seconds of the game to seal the win for the Spartans.

Devante Wilson added 16 points for the Spartans, and Chris Cunningham grabbed six rebounds. D.J. Brown had eight points, including a three-pointer to give San José State its first lead at 63-61, dished out five assists and grabbed four steals in 33 minutes of play.
San José State now takes 10 days off for finals before hosting UC Davis on Wednesday, December 18, at 7 p.m. The game is part of a doubleheader with the women who play Georgia State at 4:30 p.m.
