All-Mountain West & Team Awards Banquet Next Up For Spartan Football

Dec. 8, 2013

The 2013 post-season bowl schedule is set without San José State University. At the end of the regular season, 78 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams were eligible for 70 berths in the 35 bowls. The Mountain West Conference entered the season with a conference-high six bowl tie-ins and finished 2013 with seven conference teams (Fresno State, Utah State, Boise State, San Diego State, San Jose State, UNLV and Colorado State) meeting eligibility requirements.

San Jose State finished the season with a 6-6 overall win-loss record and 5-3 in its first year as a Mountain West member. The Spartans were one of 14 teams with a 6-6 mark. Seven of those 14 teams are in a bowl game. Western Kentucky with its 8-4 record is among the eight bowl-eligible teams without a bowl invitation.

"We were certainly hoping for one more game. It would be a great opportunity for our seniors to get that chance to suit up and play together as a team," said head coach Ron Caragher. "Sometimes, decisions are beyond our control. I'm proud of our guys the way we finished up the last game of our season - a game I'll never forget against our rivals. #16th-ranked Fresno State came into our stadium and the guys played a great game. I'm proud of them and proud of the team overall.

"We went into a new conference and had a winning record. I thought the team fought hard and competed and overcame some adversity that hit us early on in the season. They never quit, never gave up and kept competing. I'm looking forward to the great group of young players and returners we have coming back for the 2014 season."

There are many successes this year that the coaching staff and I, and the fan base are proud of. It's one last chance to reach out and honor those seniors for the many sacrifices they've made for the program and wish them well in their futures."
