Monterey, Calif.----- Five of San Jose State University's six starters scored three goals each as the Spartans easily defeated Cal State Monterey Bay in the season-opening non-conference women's water polo match for both teams.

Rachel Henry, Timi Molnar, Clara Espar, Rae Lekness and Bianca Seyfert found the back of the cage for the Spartans (1-0). Reserves Kelli Leabo, Paige Young, Amanda Pike and Donia Momen added a goal each in the second half as San Jose State played its entire lineup.

"It was great to start the season off strong," said starting goalkeeper Maddie Reardon, who kept the Otters (0-1) scoreless in her two quarters of action. "I think we did real on defense communicating, moving around and guarding people."

The Spartans led the entire way taking a 6-0 first quarter lead and building a 10-0 halftime advantage. San Jose State was ahead 13-0 before Sydney Nguyen scored a power-play goal to get Cal State-Monterey Bay on the scoreboard.

"Today was a great day overall. We were honoring Lou (Tully). It was a day of cleansing for us and it was very emotional," said interim head coach Johnny Bega about playing without former head coach Lou Tully, who died last December 17 from complications connected with cancer treatment.

"We started real strong and stayed consistent throughout the match. This year, we have a number of players who can contribute with their passing and scoring."

San Jose State returns to action January 17 & 18 playing four matches at the UCLA Invitational.
