Tempe, Ariz. - The San José State University women's gymnastics team scored a 194.200 to beat No. 25 Arizona State and Sacramento State, with five Spartans placing in the top-3 on Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena.
Julia Greer won the floor and beam, Bekah Gher won the all-around, Cassandra Harrison and Cami Guyer placed second on floor. Marissa Unpingco finished third on the bars.
No. 25 Arizona State (1-1) finished the meet with a 193.625, and Sacramento State (2-4) recorded a 192.225 team score.
It was the first time the Spartans (2-4) beat a ranked opponent since Feb. 27, 2009, when the Spartans finished .750 point ahead of No. 3 Stanford at UC Davis.
The Spartans started their night on bars and set the tone for what was to come; five of six gymnasts scored a 9.525 or higher. Marissa Unpingco scored the meet's third-best score, a team-leading 9.800. Surprise, Ariz., native, Bekah Gher earned a 9.725. Cassandra Harrison earned a 9.650, Cami Guyer recorded a 9.600 and Rachel Heinl performed a 9.525 routine.
On beam, San José State kicked into high gear. Anchoring the beam team, Julia Greer scored a meet-best 9.825. Bekah Gher scored a season-best 9.750. Kaschak added a 9.725, Guyer scored a 9.675 and Amy Bellingham earned a 9.625 for a 48.600 team score.
The Spartans continued their ascent on floor, earning a 48.725 team score after every gymnast scored a 9.650 or higher. Kiley Field led off with a 9.725. Bekah Gher and Alyssa Montalban, performing her first floor routine since 2012, earned matching 9.650 scores. The scores continued to climb as Guyer and Harrison performed second-place 9.750 routines. For the second consecutive meet, however, it was Greer who recorded the meet's highest floor score with her second 9.850 of 2014.
The solid performances kept coming for San José State in its final rotation of the night on vault. In her first collegiate performance on the apparatus, Kiana Gordon scored a team-best 9.750, matched by Harrison. Hannah Gilbert and Gher added 9.725 scores, and Greer scored 9.625.
Gher won the all-around for the first time in her career with a 38.850. Also competing in the all-around, Guyer recorded a 38.575.
San José State heads up the coast on Saturday, January 18, to Washington, where the team competes against the Huskies, Arizona State and UC Davis for a 7:00 p.m. meet.
