Los Angeles, Calif.-----San Jose State University completed its four-match series in the Bruin Invitational women's water polo tournament tying a single-match team record for most goals scored in an overpowering 22-3 win over Concordia University.
The eighth-ranked Spartans (4-1) led 8-0 after the first quarter and were ahead 17-0 before Concordia got on the scoreboard in the third quarter. The 22 goals marks the third time in school history San Jose State scored as many times. The last was in 2007 against the University of the Pacific.
Reserve Kelli Leabo led the Spartans with a personal best six goals against Concordia. Rae Lekness and Clara Espareach threw in four more apiece. For Espar, she finished the tournament with 16 goals. Lekness was not far behind with 12.
San Jose State began the day losing its first match of the season, 12-7, to 16th-ranked Loyola Marymount. The Lions (3-1) broke open a 4-4 tie late in the second quarter with three goals in the final 2:07 to take a 7-4 halftime lead. The Spartans never got closer than two goals at any point in the second half.
Espar's three goals, two of them on power plays, was tops for San Jose State. The Spartans converted on only 3-of-11 power plays against the Lions. Loyola Marymount was just 2-of-7 on power plays, but made up for it going 4-for-4 on penalty shots.
Maddie Reardonhad a busy day in goal for San Jose State in the Loyola Marymount match. She was credited with 10 saves.
Freshman Katelynn Thompsonmade her first start of the season in goal and was credited with nine saves in the Concordia win.
San Jose State returns to action, Friday, January 24, in the first of two days at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational. The Spartans take on host UC Santa Barbara and Azusa Pacific on January 24 and Fresno Pacific and UC Irvine the following day.
