Sacramento, Calif. - The San José State University women's gymnastics team garnered the third-best team score in school history, a 195.725, and earned the fourth-highest score in two events at Sacramento State with California on Friday.
California finished with a meet-best 196.725 and Sacramento State scored a 194.900.
The Spartans began the meet on bars with one of their most exciting rotations of the season, with five of six gymnasts sticking their landings. Every bars competitor earned a 9.750 or higher, leading to the fourth-highest team score in program history, a 49.100. Bekah Gher and Marissa Unpingco earned team-high 9.850 scores for second place in the meet, which were career-bests for both. Alyssa Kaschak also earned a career-high score with her 9.825. Cami Guyer scored a 9.800, while Cassandra Harrison and Rachel Heinl added a 9.775 and 9.750, respectively.
The second rotation of the night, on beam, showed solid and consistent performances. Gher, who earned a season-high 9.850 last week in the Event Center, maintained her momentum with a team-best 9.800. Harrison scored a season-high 9.775, which was matched by Julia Greer. Guyer and Kaschak both performed 9.650 routines, and Unpingco earned a 9.550 for a 48.650 score.
San José State excelled on floor, the third rotation. Harrison regained her form from 2013, when she earned five 9.900-or-higher scores. She performed a 9.900 routine that was high enough for second place, and was also the first 9.900 earned on floor by any Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) team this season. The Spartans' top floor performer, Greer scored a 9.825. Guyer earned a 9.800, while Gher scored a 2014-best 9.775. Jasmine Holmes also earned a season-best score, going 9.725, and Alyssa Montalban added a 9.700. The Spartans' 49.025 matched their season-high score in the event, earned at the UC Davis quadrangle meet on January 26.
The Spartans ended the night in heart-pumping fashion, earning the fourth-highest vault score in program history, a 48.950. The team was led by seniors Harrison (9.850) and Gher (9.825). Kiana Gordon added a 9.800, Montalban went 9.750 and Greer scored a season-high 9.725. Guyer rounded out the rotation with a 9.700.
In the all-around, Harrison placed second with a 39.300, the ninth-best in program history and highest score earned by a Spartan since Thomasina Wallace's 39.400 on March 24, 2012. Gher compiled a season-high 39.250 and Guyer scored a 38.950.
Not only did the Spartans' scores Friday night make it into the program record books, but into the MPSF record books, as well. The team's 48.950 on vault was the third-highest score recorded in conference history, the 195.725 was the fourth-best in the MPSF and the team bars score of 49.100 was No. 5 in the record books.
Harrison's performance was tied for ninth in MPSF history and Gher's 39.250 was tied for 13th.
San José State travels to Boise State on Friday, February 21, for a 7:00 p.m. (MT) dual meet.
