Davis, Calif.----- Six power-play goals propelled San Jose State University to a 12-10 win over UC Davis in the first match of the Aggie Shootout women's water polo tournament at the Schaal Aquatics Center.
The #12-ranked Spartans (9-5) had their best power-play team effort of the season converting on six of nine chances. Freshman Clara Espar Llaquet scored two of her four goals on power plays. Alisa Argend, Victoria Smith, Timi Molnar and Rae Leknessalso scored on the power play. Lekness' score at 4:54 in the third quarter, her second of the match, broke a 7-7 tie and San Jose State led the rest of the way.
"The power play definitely was the difference. We definitely capitalized on it," said San Jose State interim head coach Johnny Bega. "It (the match) was a struggle from the first through the fourth quarters, but we put it together for the win."
Maddie Reardonwas credited with nine saves in goal for the Spartans playing their first match since February 2. UC Davis goalkeeper Julian Wilding stopped six shots.
Allyson Hansen, Hannah Curran and Elsie Fullerton each scored twice for #14-ranked UC Davis (3-5).
San Jose State closes out its play at the Aggie Shootout, Saturday, February 15, taking on #16-ranked Santa Clara at 10:30 a.m. and unranked CSU Bakersfield at 1:30 p.m. Stanford, Cal State East Bay and Sonoma State also are in the weekend tournament.
