San José, Calif. --- The San José State University women's tennis team notched its third dual match victory of the season defeating Cal Poly, 4-3.
The win was the Spartans' first since defeating Sacramento State at home on January 21. Since then, San Jose State (3-8) played seven matches away from home, four in a row against nationally-ranked teams.
The doubles team of Julianna Bacelar and Jessica Willett started the day off with a win for the Spartans by defeating Hannah Stone and Mika Padmanabhan of Cal Poly (2-3), 8-4.
Playing at the #3 position, the duo of Marie Klocker and Justine Deleval secured the doubles point for San Jose State winning 8-4 over Cal Poly's Kathryn Webb and Sayaka Tsugai.
In singles, Klocker went to three sets before topping Jennifer Cornea, 7-6, 3-6, 6-0.
Freshman Gaelle Rey scored the third point for the Spartans, after winning in straight sets against Emily Gibbens, 6-4, 6-1.
Senior Sabastiani Leon Chao clinched the victory for San José State going to three sets with Cal Poly's Hannah Stone. Leon Chao came back from a 5-7 first-set loss and won her next two sets, defeating Stone 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. With the win, Leon Chao increased her career win count to 119, allowing her to move into the second spot on the Spartans 100 career win list.
"It was nice to be home after so many away matches," said head coach Sylvain Malroux. "We gained so much experience playing a really challenging schedule, but this young team is learning and getting better every match. They fought really hard so it was nice to get the win today against a tough opponent."
The Spartans are back at home on February 22, as they take on the University of the Pacific. Play begins at 12:00 p.m. at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
