San Jose. Calif. - Britta Hall scored a game and season-high 21 points, but the San José State women's basketball team lost to the Nevada Wolf Pack 99-95 on Wednesday night in a Mountain West Conference game on Walt McPherson court.
San José State (10-15, 4-10 MW) trailed by 10 points, 91-81, with 4:41 to play. They then forced three Wolf Pack turnovers, made 5-of-6 free throws and got a 3-pointer from Ta'Rea Cunnigan, who finished with 18 points including 4-for-9 from long range, to cut the lead to 91-89 in just over 1:30 of playing time.
The Spartans sent Nevada (14-11, 9-5 MW) to the line five times over the final 2:29 and saw the Wolf Pack make 6-of-10 attempts. Unfortunately, San José State was only able to score a pair of buckets on its end down the stretch. They missed two 3-pointers, each of which would have given them a lead, and a pair of free throws in the final 22 seconds, which would have made it a one-point game.
Hall, whose previous high was 13 points, was 7-for-11 for the game, 5-for-7 from 3-point range. She also dished out six assists.
Rebecca Woodberry scored San Jose State's first basket and with 14:17 to go before the half sank, the first of two 3-pointers on the night. It was her 74th of the year and tied Kari Steele's single-season record, which was set in the 1996-97 season. She established the new record on a trey with 8:09 to play.
For the game Woodberry was an efficient 5-for-8, 2-for-4 from 3-point range and made all six of her free throws. She has converted on 46 straight from the charity stripe dating back to November 17 and is 48-for-49 this year.
Posts Riana Byrd, 7 points and five rebounds, and Jasmine Smith, six points and eight rebounds, struggled with foul trouble and the inside presence of 6-7 Mimi Mungedi, who scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Byrd had three fouls in the first half and Smith two.
Byrd was whistled for her fourth with 12:14 to play and Smith with 6:37 to go and the Spartans trailing 83-79. In less than two minutes the Nevada outscored San José State 8-to-2 and led by 10 points, 91-81, with 4:41 to play.
In addition to Hall, Jayzyl Tauala scored a season-high 10 points, including seven in the first half. Classye James had 13 points, on 4-for-8 shooting and 5-for-6 from the line, and pulled down eight rebounds
Nevada had four players in double figures led by Arielle Wideman with 20 points and six assists. Danika Sharp scored 16 points and Aja Johnson added 10 in addition to Mungedi.
The Spartans have the rest of this week off and return to action next Wednesday night when they host San Diego State. Tip off in The Event Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
