Honolulu, Hawai'i - Strong pitching performances by the Spartans' upperclassmen led the San José State University softball team to sweep a doubleheader against Saint Mary's with 8-2 and 3-0 wins in the third day of the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational, hosted by Hawai'i.

"The team had a good and relaxed mindset today," head coach Peter Turner said. "Winning seven games and then losing five could be disenchanting but this team is competitive and did what they were trained to do, due in large part to the leadership our juniors provided today."

In the first game, the teams were tied, 2-2, going into the seventh inning. But mistakes by the Gaels' (5-8) infield allowed six Spartans to score. Consecutive fielder's choice plays plated Casey Watt and Jessica Garcia. After a ground out, first baseman Cassidy Szeredy made a throwing error, giving time for Chelsea Jenner and Nicole Schultz to cross home plate. An RBI-single by Devin Caldwell scored Michelle Cox and a third Saint Mary's error allowed Caldwell to get the game's final run for the 8-2 San José State (9-5) win.

Madison Fish (2-1) earned the complete game win for the Spartans, scattering four hits and allowing one earned run. She fanned two batters and walked four. Lujane Mussadi (1-5) suffered the loss for the Gaels, allowing two earned runs and walking two in 1.2 innings of relief.

In the second game, San José State got on the scoreboard first, in the third inning. With runners on first and third, Jessie Hufstetler reached on a fielder's choice and Cox was able to score the 1-0 run.

The Spartans added on to their lead in the sixth. With pinch runner Jenner on second after Garcia reached on an error, Watt's long single to right field scored Jenner for the 2-0 lead.

Watt hit a second RBI-single in the seventh to plate Kryn Masutani for the final 3-0 score.

Allison Lang saw her record improve to 6-1 with the complete game win. She allowed three hits, fanning four batters and walking one in the shutout.

For the Gaels, Mussadi (1-6) scattered 10 hits in 7.0 innings of work, allowing one earned run while striking out three.

Jenner and Cox were the Spartans' top hitter during the doubleheader. Jenner batted .750 (3-for-4) with an RBI and a double, scoring two runs. Cox went 4-for-7, scoring three runs.

The Spartans' pair of junior pitchers, Fish and Lang, combined to produce one of the best pitching performances in a doubleheader this season. They combined to scatter seven hits, the lowest for any doubleheader this season, and strike out six Gaels.

"They stepped us and gave us excellent innings," Turner said. "They threw up zeros we desperately needed and put us in a position to win and not have to score a ton of runs."
