Colorado Springs, Colo.----- For the San Jose State University women's track and field team, the 2014 Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships would be the Spartans' first championship competition and first at altitude in the program's history.

In just its third meet, San Jose State had entries in four events. Three of them were familiar ones - the 60-meter dash, 800 meters and the mile run. The fourth was the distance medley relay, far different from the 4x400 meter relay the Spartans ran at the February 17 Run for the Dream Invitational in Fresno, Calif.

San Jose State's 14 competitors, none of whom competed in NCAA Division I battle until February 1 at the UW Invitational in Seattle, will be dreaming of better days ahead when the outdoor season begins on March 22. Freshman Melanie Fujiwara was the top Spartan finisher placing 12th in the mile run with her 5:43.78 time. San José State's distance medley relay foursome of Rebecca Garcia, Madiha Raza, Lalida Maokhamphiou and Aylin Mejiacompleted the distance medley relay in 13:37.04 finishing tenth.

Raza, a freshman from San Jose, was San Jose State's fastest sprinter crossing the finish line in the 60 meters in 8.64. Freshman Nina Sassanoturned in the top Spartan time in the 800 at 2:46.47 to finish in 19th place in a 21-athlete field.

Heading into the final day of competition on Saturday, March 1, the first-year program does not have any entries for the remaining events - high jump and triple jump; shot put; 200, 400 and 3,000 meters; 60 meter hurdles; and the 4x400 meter relay.
