Four Spartans In Double Figures in 75-58 Loss To Utah State

San José, Calif.----- Four San José State players scored in double figures, but Utah State guard Spencer Butterfield scored a conference season-high 22 points leading the Aggies to a 75-58 win over the Spartans in a Mountain West Conference men's basketball game Saturday at The Event Center.

For the fifth time this season and first time in Mountain West play, the Spartans had a quartet of scorers in double figures.. D.J. Brown led the team with 15 points, followed by Jaleel Williams with 11, Jalen James with 11 and Chris Cunningham with 10.

Butterfield hurt the Spartans (7-21, 1-15 Mountain West) with a career-high six 3-point baskets. Four of them came in the first half as Utah State scored the game's first 12 points. Overall, Utah State (16-13, 6-11 Mountain West) was 9-of-20 from 3-point range.

The Aggies also got 19 points and a career-high 17 rebounds from 6-foot-10 senior center Jarred Shaw and 12 points from starting guard Preston Medlin as Utah State ended a four-game losing streak.

San José State fell behind 12-0 before Brown hit a 3-point basket nearly five minutes into the game. Brown, who had scored just 15 points in the previous seven games, matched that total against Utah State to lead the Spartans in scoring.

The Spartans trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half and 39-28 at halftime. San José State cut the deficit to 47-41 on Brown's third and final three-point basket of the night. A 6-0 run by Utah State got the lead back into double digits and the Spartans were unable to get closer than eight points the rest of the way.

San José State was able to stay in the game most of the night by getting to the free throw line. The Spartans took 31 attempts, despite not shooting a free throw in the final 6:27. San José State missed out on several chances to get closer to Utah State converting just 64.5 percent of its tries.

The Spartans close out the regular season with games at Colorado State on Wednesday March 5, and at home with Fresno State on Saturday March 8.
