San José, Calif. --- The San José State University women's tennis team won its third dual match in a row after defeating UC Santa Barbara 4-3.
In doubles, The Spartans (5-8) won in the first and second set to give San José State a 1-0 lead over UC Santa Barbara (2-8)
Playing at the #1 doubles spot, the duo of Gaelle Rey and Sabastiani Leon Chao defeated UCSB's doubles team of April Scatliffe and Priscila Garcia, 8-5. To secure the point for the Spartans, Jessica Willett and Julianna Bacelar topped Luisa Ortiz Candido and Kaiulani Boyer, 8-3.
"It was a tough match against a tough team," said head coach Sylvain Malroux. "We have to give the girls credit for one thing and that is that they are fighting so hard. Their team spirit is great and their team chemistry is amazing and the fact that they are fighting so hard things are starting to look up for us. The doubles team did a great job. It was a great effort and the way we finished the match stepping up is a statement."
In singles, freshman Marie Klocker clinched the win for San José State after defeating Scatliffe in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6.
"I love matches like this, "said Klocker about her performance. " In the second set I was down 5-0 and was tired so she was taking advantage of it, but I came back because I was stepping it up and digging up the ball. It is awesome to have the team cheering me on."
Rey and Leon Chao also won their singles in straight sets. Rey topped Boyer, 6-4, 6-1 at the #2 position and Leon Chao defeated UC Santa Barbara's Paola Cos, 6-1, 6-3.
San José State are back at home on Saturday, March 8, as it faces Santa Clara University in a non-conference dual match. Play begins at 12:00 p.m. (PT) at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
