Bandon, Ore.-----Matching the fourth best team score of the day, the San Jose State University men's golf team moved into eighth place heading into the final round of the Bandon Dunes Championship.
The Spartans' team score for the second of three rounds was a 295, two shots more than the 293 in the opening round for a 588 total on the par 71, 6,560-yard Pacific Dunes Course, but put San Jose State in contention for the team's first top-five finish of the spring season.
First-round team leader Missouri widened its margin with an even par 284, the day's low team score, for a 565 total and a 13-stroke advantage over second-place Utah Valley's 578. UC Davis at 580; Washington at 581 and Colorado at 582 round out the top-five. Saint Mary's and Oregon at 586 are just two strokes ahead of San Jose State.
Sophomore Cody Blickled the way for the Spartans with the team's first-under par round of the championship. He finished a one-under par 70 with a birdie on the 18th hole, his fifth of the round.
Blick was one of only six players in the field to better par in the middle round and stands tied for ninth at two-over par 144. The #74-ranked golfer nationally according to GolfStat moved up 31 places, the second biggest move in the second round. Blick put himself in contention for his fourth top-10 individual finish of the season and fifth tournament under par in six events this season.
Senior Justin Estradaturned in the next best San Jose State score with a three-over 74. Estrada overcame a pair of double bogeys on #4 and #6 with a birdie on #9, his second of the day, and the Spartans' first eagle of the tournament on the par 5, 12th hole. He remained in a 27th place tie at 147.
Marcus Potter, who was San Jose State's low man in round one with a 72, added a 75 for his 147. Daniel Semmler is tied for 42nd at 150 and Landon Polterockedged his way up to a 53rd place tie at 153.
Washington's Jonathan Sanders shot a bogey-free, four-under 67 to move from 11th to first. He has a one stroke lead over first-round co-leader Emilio Cuartero of Missouri who is 139 after a one-over 72.
The 54-hole tournament concludes with 18 holes on March 11.
