Los Gatos, Calif.----- On the second day of competition for the San Jose State University sand volleyball program, freshmen Megan Powers and Lauren Jacobsennearly pulled out the University's first pairs victory, but a lost a close three-set match in the Spartans' 5-0 loss to the Santa Clara University at Los Gatos High School.
Playing together for the first time and in the number-two slot, Powers and Jacobsen took the Santa Clara pair of Sabrina Clayton and Danielle Rottman to the third set before losing 21-13, 21-23, 15-7.
"Lauren and Megan came back strong in their match against a tough team...," said San Jose State head coach Aaron Shepardson. "They made a nice adjustment after the first set. They kept trying to problem solve, found a weakness and tried to exploit it for a little while and took a set from those guys."
"I'm disappointed we didn't get the win, but it is nice to get the experience so we know what tournaments and dual matches will be like (in the future)," said Powers, second in blocks per set on the 2013 San Jose State indoor volleyball team.
The other four matches were straight set wins for the Broncos (2-1) who posted their second dual match win over San Jose State (0-3) in four days.
"We're still trying to find the right combinations. We've only been at this two or three weeks and only a couple of competitions," said the Spartans coach who put five new combos on the Los Gatos High courts from the team's debut at Pacific on March 8.
"I'm seeing improvement. Our kids' heads are spinning at times, but they spun less today than the first day. They're getting more comfortable out here. It's a very different sport (than indoor volleyball). There are different strategies. So there is a lot of learning that has to take place. It's not a smooth transition from indoor to sand by any means. Only the basic skills are the same."
San Jose State is back in action, Friday, March 14, in a 4:00 p.m. non-conference match against the University of California.
