Cal Sand Volleyball Defeats San Jose State, 5-0

March 14, 2014

Berkeley, Calif.----- Facing a team with three pairs out of a possible five with at least one player 6-foot-3 or taller, the San Jose State University sand volleyball team lost a 5-0 match to the University of California.

The Spartans (0-4) only had one player taller than 6-feet, 6-foot-1 freshman Lindsay Skadeland playing in the #3-slot in the lineup with 5-foot-6 Cori O'Donoghuefor the second match in a row. They lost to Cal's 6-foot-1 sophomore Katarina Milosavljevic & 5-foot-7 freshman Sabrina Blackwell, 21-10, 21-6.

"Cal has a squad of players that are physically mature competitively and are used to a high level of competition," said San Jose State head coach Aaron Shepardson, who believed the first-year Cal program (1-1) was very comparable to the Santa Clara team the Spartans lost to twice since March 8.

The closest match of the afternoon was at #5 with the Golden Bears' Emily Lunt and Caroline Olson edging the Spartans' pair of Felicia Segura and Lyndsay Albiani, 21-16, 22-20.

"Felicia and Lyndsay played very competitive all the way through (their match). They were positive all the way. Even though they lost, they played a solid match," Shepardson said about his pair playing their second match together in a three-day span. Segura and Albiani won 36 points in the two-set match against their Cal opponents compared to 13 in a loss to Santa Clara two days earlier.

Tyanna Roy and Kiely Pieperagain played in the #1-position for the third match in a row. Cal's Adrienne Gehan and Joan Caloiaro pulled out a 21-13, 21-15 win.

"I liked the adjustments Tyanna and Kiley made. They kept their heads in the match. They looked at their situation, made adjustments, were able to stay clear-minded, solved problems and took risks," the Spartans head coach said about his top pair.

"We had a mixed bag (today). Some struggled. For us, we are looking to find out who is willing to compete and take risks."

The Spartans will have nearly two weeks to continue their self-evaluation before taking on Saint Mary's on March 27, in a 1:00 p.m. in Moraga.
