San Jose, Calif. - Good things came in threes for the San José State University women's gymnastics team on Friday. At a home dual against Sacramento State in which the team honored its three seniors, the Spartans earned the third-highest team score in program history for the third time this season. Their 49.350 on floor was also the number-three mark.
The team's 195.800 was just .125 point away from the school record of 195.925, set at the 2004 MPSF Championships.
The seniors were a major reason for the Spartans' success in their first win meet win since home dual on February 7. All three seniors placed in the top-3 in each event. Bekah Gher won the all-around and placed second on vault and beam, Cassandra Harrison placed third in the all-around, on bars and floor, and Julia Greer won the floor and beam.
San José State's opening rotation on vault saw Hannah Gilbert kicking things off with a season-best 9.750, while Cami Guyer matched a career-best 9.800. Anchor Bekah Gher scored a team-best 9.825. Cassandra Harrison added a 9.700, while Greer and Gordon earned respective 9.650 and 9.600 scores to contribute to the team's 48.725.
The team continued to fly high on bars. Five of six gymnasts earned a 9.700-or-higher. Marissa Unpingco's finale routine earned her the meet title with a career-high 9.875 score. Harrison scored a 9.775, while Gher went 9.750. Alyssa Kaschak and Rachel Heinl recorded 9.700 scores. The team went 48.800 on the apparatus.
High scores continued to come in the Spartans' next rotation on beam, with each gymnast scoring 9.725-or-higher. Greer won her fourth dual beam and floor titles of the season, scoring a meet-best 9.850 on beam. Gher and Guyer placed second with 9.800 scores. Unpingco recorded a 9.750, while Harrison performed a 9.725 routine for a 48.925 team score.
San José State closed the night in electrifying fashion on floor. The Spartans had the night's top-three scores, thanks to career-high marks by Greer (9.925) and Jasmine Holmes (9.900), and a 9.875 by Harrison. Guyer's 9.850 was also a career-high, while Kiley Field's 9.800 was a season-best. Gher's 9.750 rounded out the Spartans' 49.350 on floor, the number three score in program history.
The Spartans' three all-arounders took the meet's top spots. Gher's 39.125 was a meet best, Guyer finished second with a 39.100, and Harrison rounded out the top-3 with a 39.075.
San José State travels to UC Davis for the MSPF Championships on Saturday, March 21, at 6:00 p.m.
