March 16, 2014

San Diego, Calif.----- Freshman Clara Espar Llaquetset a new San Jose State University women's water polo freshman single-season scoring record leading the Spartans to a 17-7 victory over #20-ranked Wagner College in the Aztec Invitational.

Espar Llaquet led all players with her single-game scoring high of six goals as San Jose State (16-9) won its third match of the tournament and second in a row against a nationally-ranked team. Espar Llaquet scored four of her six goals in the first half including a power-play goal at the end of the second quarter that put the Spartans ahead to stay, 6-5, and was part of five consecutive scores bridging the two halves.

The freshman from Barcelona now has 75 goals, eclipsing the previous mark of 69 set by teammate Timi Molnarin 2011. Her current total is the third best single-season number in school history.

For the second time in the Aztec Invitational, the Spartans beat a nationally-ranked opponent and scored 17 goals spread among nine different players. Rae Lekness with three and Molnar with pair joined Espar Llaquet as multi-goal scorers. Victoria Smith, Rachel Henry, Cara Robinson, Dani Styles, Kelli Leabo and Donia Momenalso scored.

Katelynn Thompson started in goal and was credited with five saves playing the first half. Maddie Reardontook over in the third quarter and finished up with four saves in the second half.

Megan Rodriguez and Jessica Burdge led Wagner (11-9) in scoring with three goals each. The Seahawks came into the match with a season-best four-game winning streak.

San Jose State, which knocked off #8-Princeton, 10-6, in its second match of the Aztec Invitational, has an opportunity to be the only team in the eight team tournament if it can top Harvard at 2:15 p.m.
