Fresno, Calif.-Regan De Guzman recorded her best finish of the season, and My Leander finished in the top-five for the second consecutive tournament as the San José State women's golf team finished fourth at the Fresno State Classic at the Copper River Country Club.
De Guzman shot the best round of the day for the Spartans with a 73 in her final round to finish fourth at 225. She led the tournament in pars recorded with 38 including 11 on Tuesday and made a team-high three birdies in the final round.
Leander finished one shot behind De Guzman at 226 to tie for fifth place. Leander shot a 79 on Tuesday and made 12 pars in her round.
Kathleen Rojas shot an 81 to finish 17th at 232. She recorded the only other birdie for the Spartans. Rachelle Reali shot an 82 to finish 33rd at 238, and Kim Cifuentes recorded an 85 to finish 40th at 242. Alexandra Kristofersson, playing as an individual, shot a 79 to finish 30th at 237.
The Spartans shot a 315 in the final round and finished in fourth place at 919. Fresno State and Boise State tied for first, and the Bulldogs won the title on the tiebreaker by adding the fifth score. Cal State Northridge's Clariss Guce won the individual title with a two-over 218.
"We had high expectations coming off of a good performance at Almaden two weeks ago. This result is very disappointing," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "We never seemed to adjust to changing winds or the speed of the greens. It is a quick turnaround to Maui this weekend. Hopefully, we will respond with a better performance."
San José State next plays at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic next Monday to Wednesday, March 24-26.
