Woodland, Calif.----- For the second time in 2014, San Jose State University freshman Clara Espar Llaquet is the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Women's Water Polo Newcomer of the Week.
Espar Llaquet was an offensive force in the Spartans' four wins at the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State University. She scored the game-winning goals in the victories over #8-Princeton, 10-6, and #20-Wagner, 17-7. Overall, she was San Jose State's top scorer in three of the four victories and finished with a team-high 16 goals.
The newcomer from Barcelona, Spain established a San Jose State freshman single-season scoring record in the process and now has 80 goals in 2014 matching the second best overall figure by a Spartan water polo player. The previous freshman scoring record was 69 by teammate Timi Molnar in 2011.
Espar Llaquet's scoring barrage keeps her firmly in second place among MPSF players in goals scored per game. Her 3.08 average is good for second place.
The #10-ranked Spartans (17-9) are looking for their fifth win in a row when they host #14-Indiana (11-2) on March 18, at the Aquatics Center in a 4:00 p.m. non-conference contest.
