Creswell, Ore. - Sophomore Cody Blick tied for low round of the day and the San José State men's golf team moved from 16th place to a tie for 11th on the final day of the 2014 Duck Invitational on the Emerald Valley Golf Course.
"As a team, we made some positive steps with today's performance," head coach John Kennaday said. "Our biggest problem is we are compounding our mistakes. We're not moving on from them. We are allowing them to stack one on top of the other. We need to mature from this real quick."
Blick's two-under par 70 tied Colorado's Jeremy Paul, who finished in a tie for individual medalist, for low round of the day. As a team, the Spartans 11-over par (299) was the fourth best round of the day and allowed them to climb five spots on the leader board. San José State shot a 54-hole total of 906 on the par-72, 7,165 yard track.
With a pair of birdies and a bogey on his outward nine, Blick made the turn at one-under. He slid back to even par after a bogey on 11, but carded birdies on 13 and 18 to finish the day at two-under. He moved from tie for 29th to a top-10 finish. His 54-hole total was 219 (+3).
Justin Estrada also opened the day with a birdie and made the turn at one-over. A birdie and bogey on the back nine got him to the clubhouse with a 73. Estrada improved eight spots on the leader board, from a tie for 20th to a tie for 12th. His 220 (+4), three-round total, is his best score of the spring.
Landon Polterock was at one-over par through 10 holes, but a took a nine on the 453 yard par-four sixth, his 11th hole of the day. He was never able to get the strokes back and signed for a seven-over par (77). He finished the tournament at 235 (+19) and in a tie for 72nd place.
With a pair of birdies in his first three holes, Marcus Potter was at two-under after six. He made the turn at even, but surrendered five shots to par on the backside and took a 77 (+5) to the clubhouse. He finished tied for 79th place with a 54-hole total of 239 (+23).
