Stanford, Calif. - The San José State men's golf team bounced back from its worst single round score in four years, a 313 on Saturday, improving by 24 strokes on Sunday, and wrapped up Stanford's The Goodwin with an 891 (+51) and an 18th place finish.
Justin Estrada finished as the best placed Spartan in the field, tied for 34th place. He was even par on his outward nine after a bogey and birdie. On his backside he had three bogeys and finished with a 73 for the day and 215 (+5) for the tournament.
Daniel Semmler had the teams round of the day, a one-under par 69. He opened his round by posting back-to-back birdies and made the turn at one-under. On the first four holes of his inward nine, Semmler went birdie, bogey, birdie, bogey and then wrapped up his round with five pars. He finished the tournament at 12-over par (222) and in a tie for 71st place.
Marcus Potter posted birdies on his second and seventh holes, but finished his front side at two-over par. A bogey on his 14th hole left him three-over, but he got the stroke back on the 18th with a birdie. The 72 (+2) was his best round of the tournament. Potter finished tied for 73rd place at 223 (+13).
Landon Polterock trimmed seven strokes off his total from Saturday going from an 82 to a 75. His outward nine included a birdie and two bogeys. He dropped five strokes in the first eight holes of his backside before a birdie on his 18th got him to the clubhouse at five over for the day. His three day total was 231 (+21) tied for 89th place.
Stanford's Patrick Rodgers led from wire-to-wire and earned a six-stroke victory over Rico Hoey of Southern California. Rogers finished at 196 (-14). The host Cardinal won the team competition going away. They were 14-under for the day, 25-under for the tournament and finished 20 strokes ahead of second place Southern California.
