Ft. Collins, Colo.--Jaleel Williams scored 19 points for the San Jose State men's basketball team, but the Spartans could get no closer than four points in the second half as Colorado State won 78-66 in a Mountain West contest at Moby Arena.
Williams was 7-for-13 from the field including 5-for-9 from three-point range. He also led the team in rebounding with six boards. It was Williams' fourth consecutive game in double figures.
Isaac Thornton was the other Spartan in double figures with 14 points. He was 5-for-7 from the field and 3-for-3 from the free throw line in 34 minutes of action. Jalen James dished out a team-best seven assists to go with seven points and three rebounds.
"Jaleel was efficient tonight," said Spartan head coach Dave Wojcik. "He took better shots and that shows as he was 7-for-13. I also thought Isaac played extremely well tonight, not just offensively but played terrific defense."
The Spartans trailed 57-40 with 14:05 left in the game before going on a 16-3 run over the next four minutes to cut the Ram lead to 60-56 on a Thornton jumper. Colorado State then used a 10-0 run to open the game back up for the final 78-66 score.
The free throw line was a key factor in the game. Colorado State made 20-of-32 attempts from the charity stripe, while the Spartans made just six-of-seven attempts.
"I told the guys it takes 40 minutes to win a game. We have to get to the free throw line and have to make stops defensively. It is not about shooting the threes because we made 12 tonight," stated Wojcik.
San Jose State plays its final home game this Saturday against Fresno State. Tip is set for 7 p.m., at The Event Center. Senior Chris Cunningham will be honored as he plays his final home game.
