#10-Spartans Edged By #4-Cal, 12-10

March 8, 2014

Berkeley, Calif.----- Clara Espar Llaquet scored three times and Timi Molnar and Rae Leknesseach added a pair, but #10-ranked San Jose State lost a 12-10 decision to #4-ranked California in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo match.

The Spartans (13-9, 0-2 MPSF) held an early 2-1 lead, but four first-quarter scores by Amber Tarrago of the Golden Bears (14-3, 1-0 MPSF) proved to be too much for San Jose State. Tarrago matched her season high of six goals for the second time this season to lead all players in scoring and made up for the loss of Dora Antal's, the MPSF's leading scorer who missed the match due to an injury.

The loss was San Jose State's second to Cal this season. The Golden Bears eked out a 9-8 victory at the Stanford Invitational on February 1.

Rachel Henry, who gave the Spartans their only lead of the match, Bianca Seyfert and Cara Robinson, also scored for San Jose State.

Madeline Trabucco was busy in goal for Cal turning away a season-high 13 San Jose State shots. Spartan goalkeeper Maddie Reardonwas credited with three saves.

The Spartans return to action next weekend at the Aztec Invitational, March 15 & 16. San Jose State takes on Bucknell and Princeton the first day and Wagner and Harvard on day two.
