Spartans Lack Hitting In 5-2 Loss To UC Davis

March 8, 2014

Box Score

San Jose, Calif. --- San Jose State managed just five hits in a 5-2 loss to UC Davis in nonconference action on Saturday on Municipal Stadium.

The Spartans (4-12) tied the game up 2-2 by manufacturing a couple runs in the fifth inning. Brett Bautista came up with the Spartans' second hit of the game in the fifth-inning, an RBI double that scored Sheldon Daquioag. Bautista scored two batters later to tie the game on a sacrifice fly hit by Alec de Watteville.

However, the Aggies (8-8) regained the lead in the next half inning when Nick Lynch scored on Izaak Silva's sacrifice fly to center. UC Davis tacked on two more runs in the seventh and ninth innings with some small ball that made it 5-2.

Matt Carroll led off the bottom of the ninth with a single through the left side, but Matt Lopez grounded out and Sheldon Daquioag hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game. San Jose State was 1-for-11 with runners on base in the contest.

"They do a good job of getting a guy to second base and getting him in," said San Jose State head coach Dave Nakama. "We have guys on base, and we leave them there. The story of our whole season is we can't get hits with guys on base. We had the right guys up in the order. We're just not getting the timely hits."

Jonathan Hernandez started for the Spartans and gave up two runs on six hits before being lifted in favor of Myles Richard (0-1) at the start of the third inning. Richard finished the game throwing a season-high 7.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits.

Evan Wolf (1-1) pitched 6.0 innings as the UC Davis starter and received a win. Robert Parucha picked up his first save of 2014.

The Spartans and Aggies meet again tomorrow to conclude the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament. Left-hander Jace Puckett (0-1, 8.38) will start on the hill for SJSU. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
