San Jose, Calif. - The San José State University lost a 9-4, 10-inning Mountain West game to New Mexico on Friday.
The Spartans (21-16, 4-3 MW) scored the game's first run in the fourth inning. With runners on second and third, Casey Watt's shot down the left field line plated Casey Lester for the 1-0 score.
San José State built on its lead in the fifth. After a lead-off walk opened the frame, Jessica Garcia blasted her third home run in four games to left field, giving the Spartans a 3-0 advantage.
New Mexico (12-25, 3-7 MW), however, scored two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings to grab a 4-3 lead.
But the Spartans weren't going to go down without a fight. In the bottom of the seventh, Watt rocketed the ball to the fence in left center field, giving Nicole Schultz time to score from first and knot the game, 4-4.
Two scoreless innings followed. But in the top of the 10th, a two-out, three-run homer by the Lobos capped a five-run rally for the 9-4 New Mexico win.
In the game, San José State stranded 16 runners, the most since 2007. Twice, in the third and fifth innings, the Spartans left the bases loaded.
Garcia had her team-high 12th multiple-RBI game of the season in the game, while Watt's two-RBI performance was her second in three tries. Erin Rodriguez batted .750 (3-for-4), her best performance of the season.
Starter Katelyn Linford's six-inning showing yielded eight Lobo hits, two earned runs and four fanned batters. In four innings of relief, Madison Fish (5-2) scattered up nine hits and two earned runs while striking out two.
San José State and New Mexico continue their Mountain West series at SJSU Field tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
