#2-UCLA Holds On For 8-6 Win Over #6-San Jose State

April 12, 2014

Los Angeles, Calif. ----- UCLA broke a 4-4 halftime tie with two third-quarter goals and went on to defeat San Jose State University, 8-6, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo match.

Becca Dorst scored one of her team-high three goals for the #2-ranked Bruins (22-3, 4-1 MPSF) in the decisive third quarter. Kodi Hill's score at 6:27 gave UCLA a 5-4 lead that it would keep the rest of the way.

The Bruins' win over the Spartans was their second of the season. UCLA beat San Jose State, 14-6, at the Stanford Invitational in February.

Victoria Smith led San Jose State (19-11, 1-4 MPSF), tied for sixth in the April 9 national coaches' poll, with three goals. Timi Molnar, Clara Espar Llaquet and Rae Leknesseach scored once for the Spartans. Espar Llaquet, the team's leading scorer with 90 goals, was held scoreless until the fourth quarter when her score ended the Bruins' three-goal run and cut San Jose State's deficit to 7-5.

"We made too many mistakes (on offense). You can't beat a team like UCLA when you make that many mistakes," said San Jose State interim head coach Johnny Begawhose team only was 2-of-10 on the power play.

"I thought we played good team defense. To hold them to eight goals is a winnable game. We missed a five-meter penalty shot and didn't do well on the power play."

San Jose State closes out the regular season, Friday, April 18, at CSU Bakersfield in a MPSF match at 3:00 p.m.
