San Jose, Calif. - A nine-run first inning powered the San José State University softball team to a 10-1, five-inning Mountain West win over New Mexico on Saturday.
San José State (22-16, 5-3 MW) opened the game by batting around the order, putting every Spartan on base before making an out and sending 13 batters to the plate.
The game's initial run was scored when, with the bases loaded, cleanup hitter Jessie Hufstetler's hit to the Lobos' shortstop scored Devin Caldwell. Alyssa Martinez knocked the ball to right field in the next at bat, plating Jessica Garcia, and a throwing error gave time for Michelle Cox to score. An Erin Rodriguez single to deep left field pushed across Martinez and Hufstetler.
Cox capped off the inning in her second at bat of the frame with a two-out, bases-clearing triple. An error by New Mexico's shortstop allowed her to score on the play for the 9-0 Spartan lead.
The second inning saw a second error by the Lobos' shortstop, and Kryn Masutani was able to score the Spartans' 10th run of the game.
New Mexico (12-26, 3-8 MW) spoiled Madison Fish's bid for a shutout in the fourth. An RBI-single to centerfield drove in a runner from second for the final 10-1 score.
Fish (6-2) scattered three hits and allowed one earned run in the complete game win, striking out one batter.
On the day, seven different Spartans had a hit, with Cox going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI.
San José State and New Mexico conclude their Mountain West series at SJSU Field tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
