Boise, Idaho - The San José State University softball team posted double-digit hits for the 17th time this season but fell to Boise State, 7-6, in a Mountain West contest on Thursday.
Jessie Hufstetler got things going for the Spartans (23-17, 6-4 MW) in the opening frame. She knocked a hopping double down the right field line to score Michelle Cox from first for the 1-0 score.
In the bottom of the inning, Boise State's Ashley Palmer homered to right field to give her team the 2-1 advantage. A Spartan error and two-RBI single plated three more for the Broncos' 5-1 lead after the first.
The Spartans cut the Broncos' lead in the fourth. With Alyssa Martinez on second after a right field double, Sharon-Renae Estrada sent a blast to right center for her fourth home run of the season and the 5-3 score.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Broncos (22-18, 7-6 MW) added a second long ball, this time to left field, for a 7-3 advantage.
But the Spartans didn't go down quietly. In the top of the seventh, the team got four hits, including a two-RBI single by Jessica Garcia, but was unable to get the tying run and fell to Boise State, 7-6.
Katelyn Linford (8-10) suffered the complete game loss, scattering five hits and fanning one, while walking six Broncos.
Hufstetler, Estrada and Rodriguez each had two hits, helping the team to 10 hits, while Garcia, Hufstetler and Estrada each drove in a pair of runners.
San José State and Boise State resume their Mountain West series tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. (MT).
