Fresno, Calif.----- Gaelle Rey, one of two outstanding freshmen on the 2013-14 San José State University women's tennis team, was named the Mountain West Conference Co-Freshman of the Year.
Rey, from Geneva, Switzerland, was honored three times in a vote by the conference's 11 coaches. She also was named as one of 16 All-Mountain West singles players and one-half of eight all-conference doubles teams.
Following the Spartans' 4-0 victory over Colorado State in the opening round of the Mountain West Championships, Rey has an overall 19-12 singles record and a combined 18-12 mark in doubles. Playing primarily in the #2-position, she finished the regular season winning nine of her last 12 singles matches.
Rey shared the conference's Freshman of the Year honors with Lizette Blankers of New Mexico. She is the first Spartan to earn a conference's Freshman of the Year honors in women's tennis.
Marie Klocker, who played in the #1-singles position for the Spartans, also was named an All-Mountain West singles player. Klocker, from Mulhouse, France, was 14-16 in singles including 1-2 against nationally-ranked opponents.
Klocker also was Rey's All-Mountain West doubles partner. Playing as San Jose State's primary #1-doubles pair in dual match action, Klocker and Rey recorded a 10-6 win-loss record.
The highlight of their season as a combo came at 2013 ITA Northwest Regional Championships hosted by Stanford. Klocker and Rey defeated the tournament's top-seeded duo Lynn Chi and Anett Schutting of Cal who were ranked 11th nationally at the time of the match. Klocker and Rey went on to advance to the tournament's semifinal round - the first San Jose State to advance that far in the championship bracket.
