Semmler 11th; Spartans Sixth After 18 Holes At MW Championship

Tucson, Ariz. - Daniel Semmler fired four birdies in even par round to open the 2014 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship and sits in a tie for 11th place with 36 holes to go. The Spartans are in a two-way tie for sixth place with a 292 (+8) in the team competition.

Semmler made the turn at even par after three birdies, three pars and three bogeys in an eventful opening nine holes. He got his round off to a quick start, two-under par, with birdies on two of his five holes, but had three bogeys and a birdie on holes six through nine and made the turn with a 35.

He birdied the par 5, 511-yard 11th hole to get back to one-under, but gave the stroke back two holes later. After pars on his last six holes, Semmler carded an even-par 71 is tied for 11th place and is the best placed Spartan after the first round. The 71 is his best round, in relation to par, this spring.

Marcus Potter has the cleanest card among the Spartan golfer on the par 71, 7,144-yard Catalina Course at the Omni Tucson National Resort. He recorded par on all but four holes. He had a bogey on the third, a 375-yard par 4, and doubled the ninth to make the turn at plus three. On his inward half he picked up birdies on 14 and 17 and got to the clubhouse with a 72 (+1). He is in a tie for 16th place.

Cody Blick recorded just one birdie on his opening nine holes and made the turn at three-over par. He had a pair of birdies and two bogeys on the backside, signed for a 74 (+3) and is tied for 30th place.

Justin Estrada was three-over par after five holes before he recorded his first birdie. Two more bogeys, on seven and nine, and he made the turn at four-over par. He cleaned his card up on the backside, with seven pars, a birdie and one bogey to card a four-over par 75 . He is in a tie for 39th place.

Felix Möesmang recorded one birdie, on the par 5, 511-yard 10th hole, but shot a round of 85 (+14) and is in 54th place.

New Mexico has a one-shot lead over UNLV in the team competition. The Lobos shot a five-under par 279 on Friday. Carl Johnson of UNLV leads the pack for individual medalist after 18 holes. His shot a 66 (-5) and holds a two-stroke advantage over San Diego State's Riccardo Michelini.

Round two begins tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. San José State tees off beginning at 7:50 a.m. and is paired with Nevada and Boise State. Fans can follow live hole-by-hole scoring at www.golfstat.com.
