Tucson, Ariz. - On a Saturday, "moving day" at the 2014 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship, the San José State men's golf team went in the wrong direction. The Spartans started the day in a tie for sixth but recorded a 308 (+24) and finished in a tie for ninth, with a two-round total of 600 (+32) and 18 holes to play.
"We had two guys play okay today and three that just didn't," head coach John Kennaday said. "We need four guys to play well to be able to compete. For the last couple of months we haven't had four guys consistently play well. When you don't have that, you end up with a result like we had today."
Through nine holes Cody Blick was four-over par. He picked up birdies on 10 and 11 to get back to two-under, but gave the strokes right back on 12 and 13. He finished his round at three-over par after a birdie on the 186-yard par 3 17th. His 74 (+3) today along with a 74 on Friday leaves him at six-over par 148 with 18 holes to play. Blick sits in a tie for 24th place.
Daniel Semmler recorded two birdies and two bogeys through seven holes and made the turn at one-over par. He birdied the 10th hole and the 610-yard par 5 15th, but shot six-over on the inward nine for a 78 (+7) and two round total of 149 (+7). He is tied for 29th place.
Justin Estrada was even par heading to the 12th tee after a bogey on three and a birdie on the 425-yard par 4 sixth hole. But on 11, 12 and 13 he dropped four shots to par and then another on the 16th to fall to five-over. However, he birdied the 18th, a 470-yard par 4, to take his second 75 (+4) in as many days. His 36-hole total 150 places him in a tie for 34th place.
After a one-over par 72 in round one, Marcus Potter struggled throughout the second day of the Championship. He failed to record a birdie on his outward nine and made the turn at eight-over par. He got one stroke back on the 10th, a 511-yard par 5, but finished the day with an 81, 10-over par. His two-round 153 (+11) places him in a tie for 42nd place.
Felix Möesmang birdied the 395-yard, par 4 first hole, but could not keep that momentum going and shot an 84 (+13). He is 27-over par for the Championship and is in 55th place.
"It's an old cliché, but our goal tomorrow is to take it one shot at a time and stay in the present and move on from adversity," Kennaday said. "If we can do that I'll be satisfied."
New Mexico, which had a one-shot lead after the opening round, shot a three-under par 281 and increased its advantage to nine shots over second place San Diego State. The Lobos are at eight-under par (560) for the Championship.
New Mexico's Gavin Green and Victor Perez and San Diego State's Riccardo Michelini share the lead for individual medalist at 139 (-3). They have a one shot advantage over Air Force's Kyle Westmoreland.
The final round begins tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. San José State tees off beginning at 7:00 a.m. and is paired with Fresno State. Fans can follow live hole-by-hole scoring at www.golfstat.com.
