Spartans Fall To San Diego State In Quarterfinal Round

April 26, 2014

Fresno, Calif. --- The San José State University women's tennis team won two singles matches against San Diego State, but the Spartans concluded their season after falling to the Aztecs, 4-2, in the quarterfinal round of the 2014 Mountain West Championships.

With the singles matches played first and each team looking for four out of six wins to clinch the contest, freshmen Gaelle Rey and Marie Klocker and junior Jessica Willett each saw their matches go into three sets. The Spartans would win only one of these three-set matches.

Playing at the #2 position, Rey won defeating San Diego State's Kristin Buth 6-3, 4-6, 6-0. Rey's win tied the score at 1-1 and gave her an overall singles record of 20-12.

In the #1-singles match, Klocker was defeated by San Diego State's Laura Antonana, ranked 43rd nationally, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 giving the Aztecs a 2-1 lead.

Julianna Bacelar of San Jose State again tied the score at 2-2 after defeating Kennedy Davis in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4 at #4-singles. She finished the season with a singles record of 20-11.

Dora Somoracz clinched the match for San Diego State when she won the final two sets over Willett for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory that sent the Aztecs into the semifinal round.

The Spartans end their 2013-14 season with an overall dual record of 12-14 (1-3 MW).
