Women's Golf Finishes Second At MW Championship

April 26, 2014

Final Results

Rancho Mirage, Calif.--The San José State University women's golf title chances came down to one shot Saturday as the Spartans shot a 309 in the final round of the 2014 Mountain West championship. San José State finished second at 903, one shot behind champion New Mexico who finished at 902.

The Spartans finished second at conference championship for the second consecutive season. The wind played a major factor in the scores on Saturday as no team shot better than 308 on their round. San José State shot a 309, while New Mexico recorded a 312 in the final round.

"We have been on the right side of a one-shot finish in the past," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "It is painful, and I am sure each player will think about a shot or two that they could have made to be the difference in the final result.

"However, we putted very poorly at the championship. We had far too many three putts and not enough birdie chances converted. We have to improve our overall short games before next season."

Sophomore Regan De Guzman finished fourth individually at four-over 220 after shooting a team-best 75 in the final round. She was honored after the round by being named a first team All-Mountain West honoree.

De Guzman started her round strong over the first nine holes, making birdies on #3 an #6 but a bogey on #8 left her one-under par after nine rounds. Her final nine holes found her making four bogeys and five pars with no birdies. She led the tournament in par-4 scoring as she was even on those holes.

Junior Megan Osland finished tied for 11th at 10 over par 226 and shot a 77 in her final round. She made three birdies on her round, but two double bogeys on the front nine left her at +4 over the first nine holes. She responded with six pars, one of her birdies and a two bogeys over the final nine holes.

Senior Rachelle Reali shot a 77 in the final round to finish tied for 17th at +14, 230 for the tournament. She made 10 pars on her round and birdies on #11 and #18.

Freshman My Leander finished 24th at +16, 232 for her three rounds. She shot an 80 in round three as she did not make a birdie over the final 18 but did make 10 pars on her round.

Junior Kathleen Rojas shot an 83 in the final round and finished 29th at 237, +21. She made a birdie on #11 but was hampered with three double bogeys during her round.

"I want to thank the team for their hard work and efforts this season. We will Rachelle and Stephanie (Gibri) all the best as they leave San José State," stated Dormann.

Teams making the NCAA Regionals, scheduled for May 8-10, will be announced this Monday, April 28, at 3 p.m. PDT, live on the Golf Channel during Golf Central. The show will be streamed live on the Golf Channel website and posted afterwards on www.ncaa.com.
