San Diego, Calif. --- San Jose State was unable to overcome the damage of two big innings led by San Diego State's catcher Brad Haynal, and went on to lose 14-3 in the series finale at Tony Gwynn Stadium on Sunday.
The Aztecs (31-13, 12-9 MW) had a five-run burst on five hits in the second inning, which included a 2-run homer by Haynal and a 2-run single by Tim Zier.
Zier and Haynal were in the mix again in the sixth when SDSU put up a six-spot that increased its lead to 11-3. Zier came up with an RBI-double and Ty France followed with a 2-run single. Then Brad Haynal blasted his second home run of the game, a 3-run shot over the left field fence.
Haynal added a 2-run double in the bottom of the eighth and finished the game with seven RBI. He finished the three-game series 6-for-11 with four runs and 10 RBI.
The Spartans (13-31, 7-17 MW) got two runs in the top of the third which made it a 5-2 game. Mike Simonini led off with a double and scored three batters later on Jacob Valdez's single to left-center. Matt Lopez also had an RBI-single later in the frame.
SJSU made it 5-3 in the fifth when Lopez hit his second triple of the season and scored when Sheldon Daquioag singled to left.
Spartans starter Logan Handzlik (2-3) lasted 2 1/3 innings and gave up five earned runs on six hits.
Mark Seyler (7-3) scattered 13 hits over seven innings and allowed three runs in the win.
San Jose State plays five games next week and will conclude with the final home series of 2014 against Fresno State. Sunday will be senior day, and there will be a fan appreciation luau following the conclusion of the game.
