Tucson, Ariz. - The San José State men's golf team were one of just four to post a sub par round on final day of the 2014 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship. The Spartans were 25 shots better on Sunday than on Saturday and finished the Championship with a 283 (-1) in the final round and a 54-hole total of 883 (+31). They leaped over three teams in the final 18 holes and finished in seventh place.
We came close to playing really well today," head coach John Kennaday said. "This was a nice finishing round in an otherwise disappointing Championship. I'm proud of the way we responded in the today's round."
Cody Blick was on his game from the start. He recorded birdies on the first, third and fifth hole. He would have made the turn at three-under par were it not of a bogey on the 436-yard par 4 ninth hole. As it turned out it was his only blemish of the day. He pared 10 through 17 and wrapped the Championship with a birdie on the 470-yard par 4 18th. Blick authored the team's only round in the 60s finishing with a 68 (-3) and a three round total of 216 (+3). He finished in a 14th place.
Senior Daniel Semmler, playing in his final collegiate tournament, opened with a birdie on the 395-yard par 5 first and stayed at one-under until a bogey on the seventh. He completed his outward nine in even par but back to-back bogeys, on the 11th and 12th dropped him to two over. Semmler battled back with birdies on the 428-yard par 4 16th and 186-yard par 3 17th to get to the clubhouse with an even par 71. He completed the Championship with a 220 (+7) total and in a tie for 22nd place finish.
Justin Estrada, also a senior in his last tournament as a Spartan, led the team with five birdies. With birdies on the first and fourth holes, he was two-under par, but gave them back with a pair of bogeys and made the turn at even par. On his inward nine, he came out on fire. Estrada had back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th and got to three-under par after another birdie on the 610-yard par 5 15th. He pared 16 and 17, but stumbled with a double bogey on 18 and finished with a 70 (-1). His 54-hole total is 220 (+7), which places him in a tie for 22nd place.
"It's kind of ironic that our two seniors finished their final tournaments tied," Kennaday added.
After bogeying the first hole, Marcus Potter regrouped and ripped off three birdies over his next six holes to get to two-under par. He surrendered those shots after bogeys on the ninth and 11th, but Potter regrouped again and pared the next five holes. Unfortunately, he couldn't keep that momentum going and was three over on the final two holes. He signed for a 74 (+3) and a three-round total of 227 (+14). He finished 44th place.
Felix Möesmang birdied the 587-yard, par 5 eighth hole, but shot an 82 (+11). He completed the Championship at 38-over par and in 55th place.
New Mexico held on for the three-stroke win over San Diego State in the team competition and have earned the conference's automatic bid the 2014 NCAA Regional Championship. The Lobos finished at 846 (-6).
After 54 holes, New Mexico's Gavin Green and San Diego State's Riccardo Michelini shared the lead for individual medalist at 209 (-4). On the first hole of the playoff, Michelini bogeyed and Green pared giving the individual medalist honor to Green.
