Spartans Swept By #1-USC & Bakersfield

April 5, 2014

Bakersfield, Calif.----- San Jose State University lost a pair of sand volleyball matches to #1-University of Southern California and host Bakersfield by 5-0 scores to close out its two-day, three match weekend at the CSU Bakersfield courts.

"As far as quality of play, it (today) was our best event yet. The things that we have been working on are starting to take shape," said San Jose State head coach Aaron Shepardson. "Our ball control is starting to stabilize. We were able to pass, set and attack more. Our passing and setting were more consistent. We served (the ball) better and did not give our opponents easy balls (to play)."

The Spartans' number-four pairing of Lindsay Skadelandand Brittney Diffinè had the most success on the day winning 56 points. The San Jose State duo also came the closest to winning a set when they pushed the University of Southern California (USC) pair of Alexx Murphy and Bria Russ to a 21-17 second-set score after Murphy and Russ won the first set 21-8.

"They (Skadeland and Diffinè) had a breakthrough today. Brittney did a nice job on defense. She was aware of what the opponent was trying to do," the Spartans head coach said. "They were a lot more steady overall."

The win by USC raised the Trojans' season record to 14-1.

Playing Bakersfield (5-6) twice in less than 24 hours, San Jose State (0-8) kept its first four pairs together for its second match of the day. Felicia Segura replaced Sabrina Webb at #5.

Skadeland and Diffinè were the one Spartan pair to reach double figures in points scored in both sets losing to Danika Youngblood and Sydney Haynes, 21-16, 21-15. The score was a significant improvement for Skadeland and Diffinè who lost to Youngblood and Haynes, 21-10, 21-6, the night before.

San Jose State returns to action, Tuesday, April 8, at Stanford. First serve is at 3:30 p.m. (PT).
