Cle Elum, Wash.-San Jose State women's golfer Regan De Guzman finished the 2013-14 season Saturday as she shot an 81 in the final round of the 2014 NCAA West Regional to finish in a tie for 75th at 237.
The round did not start the way De Guzman had hoped. Starting out on #10 on the Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort, she double bogeyed the her first hole of the day, followed by bogey, par, bogey and double bogey and was +6 after five holes. De Guzman proceeded to par three of the next four holes but was +7 (43) after her first nine holes.
After the turn, De Guzman found some success on holes #1-5. She made par on four holes and birdied the par-4, 320-yard #3. However, the final four holes found De Guzman making three bogeys and one par for her 81 to finish the tournament.
"Regan struggled this week for a few reasons," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "She never mastered the speed and breaks on the greens and struggled with her putting all week. Playing as an individual, she began to focus on her score and lost her processes. I think she felt a pressure that she is not yet used to on the course, and this was a good learning experience for Regan.
"She has fought injury and illness all year, and making it to regionals was a great accomplishment. I look for her to be stronger and better next year after a good summer of practice and tournaments. "
