Eugene, Ore. - San José State men's golfer Cody Blick carded just three birdies in the first round of the 2014 NCAA West Region Golf Championship at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore., and with 36 holes to play, sits in a tie for 54th place with a 76 (+6).
Blick birdied the 395-yard par 4 first hole, but then bogeyed six of the next eight to finish his first nine holes at five-over par.
He opened the backside with a birdie on the 401-yard par 4 10th, but gave the stroke back two holes later. Blick picked up another red number with a four on the 525-yard par 5 13th, but again surrendered the stroke on the next hole. He closed the round with three pars before a bogey on the 18th hole left him at six-over par 76.
"Cody struggled with the driver as well as around and on the greens," head coach John Kennaday said. "This is a three-day tournament so we have time to get this turned around and we are going to work on that this afternoon."
Stanford, the highest-ranked team competing in the regional, leads the team competition after shooting a four-under 276. They have a four-stroke advantage over Oklahoma, which shot an even-par 280. Stanford's Patrick Rogers shot the low round of the day, a four-under par 66, and has a one-stroke lead over two players.
The low individual after the three rounds, not on one of the five advancing team, will qualify for the 2014 NCAA Men's Golf Championships, May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
Second round action begins at 8:00 a.m. on Friday. Blick tees off on the 10th hole at 10:01 a.m. Fan can follow the action with live hole-by-hole scoring at www.golfstat.com.
