San Jose, Calif. - San Jose State men's soccer players Andrew Kelly, Kyle O'Mahoney and Felix Petermann were named Academic All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC) performers for the 2013 season, it was announced Monday.
To be recognized a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 or better; have completed one full academic year and have competed in 50 percent or more of his team's contests this season. Kelley and Petermann, transfer students, and O'Mahoney, a freshman, join Emmanuel Espinosa and Jamison Loveless who earned the honor in January.
Kelly, who will be a senior in 2014, is a native of Darlington, England and an international business major with a 3.237 GPA. The 2013 season was his first at San José State after transferring from Saint Peters University in Jersey City, N.J., where he competed in 2011 and 2012.
Kelly, a central defender, started 16 of the 17 matches in which he appeared in 2013. He attempted six shots, putting two on frame.
A communications major from Berlin, Germany, Petermann has 4.000 GPA. The sophomore keeper made six starts in seven appearances last season. He allowed 15 goals and had a 2.37 goals against average in just over 570 minutes of action.
Petermann transferred to San José State from Towson University after the men's soccer program was discontinued following the 2012 academic year. Peterman will be a junior in 2014.
O'Mahoney, a defender out of Hednesford, England, is undecided on a major, but compiled a 3.523 GPA in the 2013-14 academic year.
He produced 11 shots on the year, with three being on goal, and saw a team-high 1,718 minutes of field time. O'Mahoney appeared in 20 matches and made 18 starts in his freshman campaign.
Of the 650 student-athletes receiving Academic All-WAC honors on Monday, 342, including Kelley, O'Mahoney and Petermann, were freshmen and transfers in 2013.
