July 15, 2014

Colorado Springs, Colo.----- San José State University women's swimmer Darcie Anderson, a May 2014 graduate with honors, is this year's Mountain West Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.

The conference award is the latest for the kinesiology major from Willows, Calif., who earned a cumulative 3.98 (out of a 4.00) grade-point average during her four years at the University and graduated with summa cum laude honors.

"I am greatly humbled and honored to be recognized as the Mountain West Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. I could not be more grateful for the academic/athletic support from my coaches, professors, and family members," says Anderson, one of the most honored San Jose State University student-athletes for academic accomplishments in recent years.

Since graduating, Anderson was named a 2014 Capital One Academic All-America At-Large second-team selection, to the Mountain West Conference All-Academic team for winter and spring sports, a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete and College Swim Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America Honorable Mention award winner.

She was a 12-time all-conference swimmer specializing in the breaststroke and competed in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. And, she volunteered time with the Special Olympics, the Silicon Valley Agency Partnership and the Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative (BAWSI).

The Mountain West Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award is the highest honor presented to a student-athlete by the Conference. The award is bestowed annually to one male and one female who best exemplify the term "student-athlete" by achieving excellence in academics, athletics and community involvement.

In addition to athletic achievement, recipients of the Mountain West Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award must have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade-point average, demonstrate leadership, and exhibit good character and conduct on and off the playing field. Each honoree receives a postgraduate scholarship.

"Once again, I am pleased to congratulate Darcie on all that she accomplished both athletically and academically. For four years, she was the model student-athlete for our team and department," says Sage Hopkins, San José State's women's swimming and diving head coach. "Her dedication to herself, her team, and her university was an inspiration to all."
