Conference Honorees

Indianapolis, Ind.----- In a summer filled with honors and recognition, the latest for San José State University's Darcie Anderson is one of two Mountain West Conference 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year Award winners.

A May 2014 graduate summa cum laude and a 12-time all-conference swimmer for the Spartans during the 2011 through 2014 seasons, Anderson is among the 126 NCAA female student-athletes representing multiple sports across NCAA Divisions I, II and III as a 2014 Woman of the Year honoree by their athletics conferences and by independent schools.

"We offer our heartiest congratulations to Darcie on this award. She epitomizes all the values of being a superior NCAA Division I student-athlete. It's truly amazing how she managed her time to be one of our top athletes, excel academically, contribute on the campus and in the community and enjoy student life," says San Jose State University associate athletics director of athletics and Senior Woman Administrator Liz Jarnigan.

A kinesiology major from Willows, Calif., who graduated with a 3.98 cumulative grade-point average, Anderson is the first San José State University to receive this honor in the 24-year history of this awards program. The awards program honors graduating female student-athletes for their achievements in academics and athletics and their participation as leaders and in community service.

A two-time team captain, Anderson's volunteer activities while at San José State included the Special Olympics, the Silicon Valley Agency Partnership and the Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative (BAWSI).

Since the beginning of June, she was named a 2014 Capital One Academic All-America At-Large second-team selection, the Mountain West Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, to the Mountain West Conference All-Academic team for winter and spring sports, a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete, and a College Swim Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America Honorable Mention award winner.

Anderson is one of five conference honorees representing the sport of women's swimming and diving. By division, 52 honorees competed in Division I conferences, 25 competed in Division II, and 49 competed in Division III.

Next, the Woman of the Year selection committee will select the top 10 honorees in each division from this pool to be recognized. These top 30 honorees will be announced in early September. The selection committee will then choose and announce the top nine finalists (three from each division) at the end of September.

The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will vote from amongst those nine finalists to determine the 2014 Woman of the Year.

The top 30 honorees will be honored, and the 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year winner will be announced, at the annual ceremony in Indianapolis on Sunday, Oct. 19.
