ATLANTA --- 312 of the nation's best amateur golfers began their quest Monday to be among the top 64 that advance to match play at the 2014 U.S. Amateur Championship hosted at the Atlanta Athletic Club (AAC).
San José State's Cody Blick is right in the mix after shooting an opening-round 72 (E) at the AAC's Riverside Course. The junior-to-be had three birdies on his back nine, including one on the the 576-yard par-five 18th. He is tied for 44th place with one more round of stroke play ahead tomorrow.
The top 64 begin the match play portion on Wednesday morning.
Blick punched his ticket to U.S. Amateur Championship when he took medalist honors in a qualifier at Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton, Calif., in mid July.
The Danville, Calif., native is six strokes back of co-leaders Jimmy Beck, Sam Horsfield and Taylor Moore who all shot six-under 66.
Blick is looking to continue San José State's rich history in USGA events, which includes Ken Venturi's 1964 U.S. Open victory and four Women's U.S. Open Championships won between Julie Inkster and Patty Sheehan. Inkster also won three consecutive U.S. Women's Amateur Championships, and Pat Hurst was the 1989 medalist and 1990 champion.
Blick's second-round tee time is set for Tuesday morning at 9:35 a.m. EDT.
