SPARTANS BEGIN 2014 AT HOME VERSUS LAMAR

The San José State women's soccer team opens up the 2014 season Friday, August 22 at 2:00 p.m. versus Lamar at Spartan Soccer Field. This year's opener will look a little different as it will be the first regular season competition at the new Spartan Soccer Field. The match will also be a debut for SJSU's new head coach Lauren Hanson.

THE Lauren Hanson ERA BEGINS

Friday's match with Lamar will be San José State's first under the direction of new head coach Lauren Hanson. Hanson became the program's sixth head coach in December of 2013, replacing Jeff Leightman, who coached the team for six seasons (2008-13). A winner of NCAA Women's College Cup championships as a player and a coach, Hanson came to the Spartans from the University of Oregon where she was the associate head coach and the Ducks' recruiting coordinator.

LEADERS RETURN FOR 2014

San José State has returned its top three goal scorers from 2013: Lupita Estrada, Karelli Rodriquez and Alexis Venegas. All three recorded over 1,200 minutes of action last season and accounted for 21 of the team's 29 total points.

JUNIOR COLLEGE ALL-AMERICAN MAKES SPARTAN DEBUT

Darlene Rodriguez, a junior college All-American and 2013 Coast Conference Player of the Year debuts with San José State this season. The two-time first-team all-conference selection led Evergreen Valley College to consecutive league titles in 2012 and 2013.

A NEW HOME FOR SPARTAN SOCCER

SJSU men's and women's soccer has a new home beginning with the 2014 season. All home matches will be played at Spartan Soccer Field located at South Campus on Alma street, between Seventh street and Senter road.

SPARTANS PICKED 10TH IN PRESEASON COACHES' POLL

The 2014 Mountain West Coaches' poll predicts that San José State will finish in a tie for 10th place out of 12 teams. Colorado State stands alongside the Spartans in the poll, both ahead of Air Force, predicted to finish 12th. San Diego State and the MW's newest member Colorado College each received five first-place votes and are predicted to finish first and second in the league respectively.
