San Jose, Calif. --- A goal given up in the 42nd minute was the difference in a 1-0 loss for the San Jose State women's soccer team in the 2014 season opener versus Lamar Friday at Spartan Soccer Field.
Lamar's Alexus Aviles took a pass in from the right side of the box and kicked the ball over SJSU goalkeeper Zoe Makrigiannis for the match's only score.
"They had one good opportunity that we unfortunately turned over to them," said Spartans' head coach Lauren Hanson after her first match leading the program. "We had two good opportunities that didn't go in for us, and that's just soccer."
San Jose State had two shots go off the crossbar, including one in the 78th minute off the foot of Mireya Wathen-Mayorga on a penalty kick outside the box.
"I thought today was a good step forward," Hanson said. "We did a lot of good things, but we have lots to work on defensively and especially on the attack."
SJSU's next match is on the road at UC Davis on August 29 beginning at 5:00 p.m.
