Davis, Calif. - A 77th minute goal from UC Davis was good enough, as the San Jose State women's soccer team dropped its first road contest of the season, 1-0, to the Aggies.
Midway through the first half of play, the San Jose State backline nearly coughed up an early advantage to UC Davis off a bad touch. UCD's Zuzu Romano was able to somewhat capitalize on the Spartans' mistake. Romano took two steps and fired a shot, but fortunately for SJSU, the attempt sailed high. Shortly after the miscue by the Spartans, San Jose State (0-2) committed a foul, which resulted in a free kick for the Aggies. The attempt ended in similar fashion as Romano's attempt, going high off the header from Lindsey O'Tousa.
At the end of the first half, the Spartans totaled a pair of shots with one on goal, while UC Davis (2-1) put together a trio of attempts with one of their own on goal.
In the 77th minute UC Davis struck first when Sienna Drizin took a shot along the far end line on an extremely tough angle. The shot went off the glove of San Jose keeper Zoe Makrigiannis but somehow managed to creep pass for the UC Davis goal, and the eventual game winner.
"Well the team played really well, and gave a complete effort offensively and defensively," said first year head coach Lauren Hanson. "I think we're really making progress, and heading in the right direction."
The Spartans and the Aggies finished the match equal in shots at six, while UC Davis held the advantage in shots on goal, 4-3. SJSU held the edge in corners,2-0, as UCD totaled 15 fouls during the match compared to the eight committed by SJSU.
San José State will return home to host Sacramento State on Sunday, August 31, at 1:00 p.m.
