SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior goalkeeper Zoe Makrigiannis stood strong in goal as the San Jose State women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw Friday night at UC Santa Barbara.

For the last match and a half San Jose State (2-3-1) was able to establish some type of rhythm. However, in the first half of play at UC Santa Barbara (2-3-2), the Gauchos were able to keep the Spartans on its heels.

In its previous matches, the Spartans back line was alert and operating on one accord. The Gauchos threatened San Jose a pair of times when UCSB's Angelisa Cortez found a crease in the Spartan backline of a thru ball that left Makrigiannis one on one in the 22nd minute.

Makrigiannis was able to get a hand on the Cortez attempt, altering the trajectory of the shot to prevent UCSB from taking the early lead.

Shortly after, Dakota Griggs fed Amanda Ball a nifty pass, but her attempt sailed slightly right and kept the match even going into halftime.

In the second half, the Spartans had an opportunity in the 62nd to get on the scoreboard first off a Mireya Wathen-Mayorga corner. Dorthe Hoppius was able to get her head on the ball, but the attempt went wide right.

Both teams traded possessions but could not quite put together a complete run as regulation time expired.

UCBS's Miranda Cornejo nearly came up with the golden goal in the 107th minute when she received a cross but marginally misfired on the shot.

"Good result for us getting a tie," said head coach Lauren Hanson. "As much as you want to win, but we were satisfied with the result. Our team played their heart out."

UCSB outshout San Jose 14-1, but Makrigiannis refused to let one slip by her as she recorded a match-high five saves.

"Zoe was great in keeping the shutout. She Played fantastic. Our team gave a phenomenal effort today, and the coaching staff was very proud of the group," said Hanson.

The Spartans will play its final match of the weekend, Sunday, September 14 against the Dons of at Negoesco Stadium San Francisco. Match time is set for 12:00 p.m.
